Padres Make Two Moves for the Stretch Run

The San Diego Padres today acquired left-handed pitcher David Wells from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Not bad moves since they are costing San Diego next to nothing.

Around the Horn

The Mets get good news, the Phillies get bad news, and the Cubs get, well, it doesn't really matter...

The following press releases were issued today by the media relations departments in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle and Chicago respectively:
  • The New York Mets announced today that Tom Glavine's hand condition is not serious and that he will be able to resume activity in two days and return to pitching over the next 7 to 10 days. Team doctors performed an angiogram at the Hospital for Special Surgery yesterday to determine the cause of the coolness Glavine was feeling in his left ring finger. The test showed that the symptoms are caused by an old injury to an artery probably caused by pitching. The scar tissue from that old injury occasionally causes blood clots to form in Tom's finger. The condition is not serious and will be treated with baby aspirin and other medication to help his circulation.
  • Outfielder Aaron Rowand was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left ankle, Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. Rowand, 28, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks and will return to Philadelphia to see a foot specialist once he is medically cleared to fly. He suffered the injury in a collision with second baseman Chase Utley during the bottom of the 8th inning of last night's game at Wrigley Field.
  • Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the club has selected right-handed pitcher Cha Seung Baek from triple-A Tacoma. The 26-year-old Korean pitcher will start tonight in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field vs. the New York Yankees.
  • The Chicago Cubs today selected outfielder Buck Coats from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago placed infielder Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Izturis, 26, injured his hamstring in last night’s 6-5 loss to the Phillies at Wrigley Field. The switch-hitter was acquired by Chicago from the Dodgers in exchange for Greg Maddux on July 31. Izturis is batting .246 (44-for-179) with a home run and 17 RBI on the season.

Cubs Trade Neifi Perez to Tigers

The Chicago Cubs today traded infielder Neifi Perez to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for the Tigers’ third-round selection from the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, catcher Chris Robinson.

Robinson, 22, was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game, having batted .288 (92-for-319) with 22 doubles and 47 RBI for the Single-A Lakeland Tigers this year, his second professional season.

Obviously, Omar Infante's error last night didn't sit well with Detroit management!

A native of La Romana in the Dominican Republic, the 6-2, 210-pound Villalona was heavily scouted by all of Major League Baseball. He was signed by both Rick Ragazzo, the Giants' Director of International Operations, and Pablo Peguero, the club's Director of Dominican Republic Operations.

Sox DFA Seanez

The Boston Red Sox today recalled righthander Jermaine Van Buren from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Van Buren will wear #46 and be in uniform for this afternoon's game with the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. To make room for Van Buren, righthanded pitcher Rudy Seanez has been designated for assignment.

This is an interesting move for the Sox. I wouldn't be surprised to see Seanez wind up in Atlanta. After all, he had planned to go to the Braves this off-season before signing a more lucrative deal with the Red Sox.

Here's What's Happening at BDD!

This has been, and will continue to be, an exciting week for Baseball Digest Daily!
  • We were thrilled to learn on Tuesday that BDD will be added to the index of sources for Google News! We're very proud of this accomplishment and hope that it will greatly increase our exposure.
  • On Tuesday morning, we will finally be issuing our national press release through PRWeb and PR Newswire. The distribution list is enormous so keep an eye out for it, and let us know if you come across it anywhere.
  • Today we were very fortunate to interview J.C. Bradbury of Sabernomics. com. That transcript will be up this weekend. Be sure to check it out!
  • On Sunday, in conjunction with Bleed Cubbie Blue, we will have an interesting discussion with Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry.
  • And on Monday, Will Carroll from Baseball Prospectus joins us to share some news on a "secret project" he's working on these days...those are Will's words by the way.
  • Some time next week we will talk again with Royals GM Dayton Moore, but there's no scheduled time for that at the moment.
As we head toward the playoffs, we'd like to thank you all once again for your support! Don't forget to spread the word and tell your friends about BDD!

BJ Upton, Bobby Crosby Updates

Here's the official updates on BJ Upton of the Devil Rays and Bobby Crosby of the A's...

Tampa Bay's BJ Upton suffered a mild shoulder strain last evening and is day-to-day. He should be back in 2-3 days.

The Oakland A’s today reinstated shortstop Bobby Crosby from the 15-day Disabled List and outrighted D’Angelo Jimenez to Triple-A Sacramento. Crosby was placed on the Disabled List retroactive to July 31 with a lower back strain.

Anthony Reyes Optioned to AAA?

That's correct...this one is even more interesting than the signing of Preston Wilson. The Cardinals made a roster move to make room for Wilson today, optioning RHP Anthony Reyes to Triple-A Memphis. I'd be shocked not to see Reyes back before the end of the month to be eligible for the playoff roster.
