It is quite amazing to see some of these names on the non-tendered list given the megabucks being thrown at many mediocre free agents in the past month. I would have thought that people like Joel Pineiro, Marcus Giles, Toby Hall, Jorge Sosa and Victor Zambrano would have been attractive on the trade market... they all have something in common though, and that is a multi-year major league career with recent numbers that don't match their career peaks. I guess their salaries are making them unattractive enough to cause them to have to start over. I'd sure want to take a couple of them over guys who signed for big bucks... I mean, on the open market isn't Pineiro worth more than Seattle's latest signee, Miguel Batista??
The have to be a lot of Met fans pushing pins into Steve Phillips dolls as the Mets see Victor Zambrano float away, while Scott Kaczmir has become a 23-year-old ace in Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, Phillips becomes a big TV analyst who criticizes the trades other GM's make? Hello!!

One of the issues that makes some of these players untradeable was discussed over at Sabernomics regarding Marcus Giles. Specifically, if you feel that Giles is worth between six and eight million for his age 29 season, and he is likely to make that in arbitration, then it is difficult to make a deal, because you are already paying what he is worth to you in toto with his salary. When makign a deal, the salary you're going to pay must be less than your perceived value of a player, otherwise you are paying too much for him. That's why the Braves couldn't swing an acceptable deal for Marcus Giles.

Dead on, brother! I think Batista's versitlity provides a security blanket to what appears to be an aimless plan to improve pitching in Seattle, and I think the franchise is walking away from their "future aces" of Meche, Pineiro, etc, in order to make a statement. Only an explanation, trust me- as I cannot believe the Batista money, myself. If Zambrano finds the strike zone (and a new ligament or two) he could be a decent 1-yr risk- until he demands 12 mil ayr the next season, of course. Not that I'm saying the contracts are out of hand, heck, Steve Phillips can say that.

Actually it was not Steve Phillips who made that retarded deal it was his heir apparent Jim Duquette who made the deal, meanwhile that dick is the asst GM of the Baltimore Orioles

I would think that Pinero might be a candidate for success with another team, one with a strong manager and pitching coach.

I would look to the Cubs, Mets, Yankees, or Braves as good destinations for him.
