Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Morneau Edges Jeter for AL MVPThe Minnesota Twins were informed today that first baseman Justin Morneau has been named the American League Most Valuable Player. He is the youngest player to win the award since Frank Thomas in 1993. Morneau, 25, batted .321 (190-592) with 37 doubles, one triple, 34 home runs and 130 rbi in 157 games this season. He finished the 2006 season second in the league in rbi, fifth in total bases (331), seventh in batting and eighth in extra-base hits (72). Morneau’s 34 homers were the most by a Twins player since 1987 and his 130 rbi rank as the second highest total on the Twins’ All-Time single season list (Killebrew, 140 in 1969). posted by Joe Hamrahi at 10:25 AM |

Morneau held a press conference to discuss his MVP award today. Some impressions:
1. Morneau is a very likable guy. Very down-to-earth, talking about "hanging out", spending time with his girlfriend, talking to his dad, etc.
2. He accented the "team" part of the award, and how the Twins were a "team full of MVPs". He named Santana, Mauer, and Cuddyer, and cited some of their accomplishments. His vote for MVP went to Mauer.
3. He named other MVP candidates and spoke highly of them all. He expressed his pride at being named as being among them. He noted that he talked to his dad, who said he was proud that he was among the best, and not to worry about who actually won. It all seemed very humble.
4. He said he thought he had "about [pronounced "a-BOOT"] a 50/50 chance" of winning the award before today.
5. Apparently he's sharing a house with Joe Mauer. When asked if he'd hang his MVP trophy there, he said no, that would go back to his parents' home.
6. He and Larry Walker (the only other Canadian MVP winner) have gotten to know each other this year (same agent), and communicate via text messages. He said he'll text Walker when things are tough... I couldn't help but wonder if some of these were of this nature:
Morneau (2:08:10 PM): Hey Larry, this Randy Johnson guy keeps striking me out. What do you suggest?
Walker (2:08:22 PM): Time your injury days better.
Anyway, Justin Morneau - great guy. Not who I thought was the "most valuable" player this year, but the Twins rocked, and it's nice that they pulled down the two big awards. And the award couldn't have gone to a nicer guy.
