PITTSBURGH, PA — In a move to shore up the bullpen, the San Francisco Giants have acquired veteran left-hander Mike Stanton from the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor league right-hander Shairon Martis, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

Currently second in the National League with 56 relief appearances this season, Stanton posted a 3-5 mark with a 4.47 ERA (22er, 44.1ip) for Washington. Most recently, the 18-year veteran has forged a 1.08 mark (1er, 8.1ip) over his last eight outings.

Martis, who was signed by San Francisco as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, was 6-4 with a 3.64 ERA (31er, 76.2ip) in 15 starts this year with single-A Augusta in the South Atlantic League.
